The  logically  first  and  most  highly  esteemed  source  of  law  in  Islam  is  of  course  the  Kuran  ;  there  could  be  no  doubt  of  its  final  authority  and infallibility,  nor  could  there  be  any  doubt  that  it  has  been  handed  down  essentially  intact.  The  fact  that  the  Kuran  itself  describes  several  of  its  sections  as  abrogated  by  later  several  of  its  sections  as  abrogated  by  later  revelations  ,  is  not  in  contradiction  to  this  .  It  was  the  task  of  later  interpretation  to  eliminate  the  numerous  contradiction  within  the  Kuran  ,which  reflect  the  development  of  Muhammad's  prophetical  mission  ,by  harmonising  them  or  in  extreme  cases  by  assuming  that  the  later  revelation  abrogated  the  earlier.  It  was  no  way  the  prophet's  intention  to  create  even  in  it's  main  outlines  ,  a  "system"  which  was  to  regulate  the  whole  life  of  his  followers  ;  on  the  contrary  ,  the  old  Arab  customary  law  which  already  included  many  elements  of  foreign  origin  remained  in  force  in  Islam  as  a  matter  of  course  with  its  variations  reflecting  the  local  and  social  conditions  ;  the  new  legislation  contained  in  the  Kuran  does  not  go  farther  than  to  correct  isolated  points  out  of  considerations  of  religion  -  for  even  the  modifications  affecting  social  life  have  a  religious  basis  from  case  to  case  ,  mostly  with  regard  to  concrete  happenings.
